Another of these compounds is known as PFOS, and is the main ingredient in widely used firefighting foam, which has lead to widespread contamination around military bases, airports, and firefighter training facilities. Over the last decade, many US states—and countries around the world —have slowly realized they have a massive water contamination problem on their hands.
PFAS were, and in some cases continue to be, widely used chemicals that do not degrade in the environment, and the health effects of exposure to elevated levels of it are just beginning to be understood. PFAS are now detectable at low levels in the blood of virtually everyone. Culpable companies—like DuPont and 3M — knew of the potential health effects but, much like Exxon did with climate changechose not to make their findings public.
Today, studies link elevated exposure to PFAS to heightened cancer risksinfertilityand developmental delays. One study found that young men living close to a PFAS site in Veneto, Italy had smaller penises and lower sperm counts.

What makes the verdict remarkable is that unlike, say, mesothelioma — a form of lung cancer almost exclusively linked to asbestos exposure — the renal cell carcinoma that struck Bartlett is not usually considered the calling card of a specific carcinogen.
So it was difficult for her doctors to definitively say what had first made Bartlett sick — it could have been virtually anything. The very improbability of that verdict demonstrates much that is flawed about the way this country regulates potentially dangerous chemicals.
Teflon was first created, as many miracle chemicals were, in a laboratory accident. InRoy J. Plunkett, a DuPont chemist, was experimenting with refrigerants when he discovered a white waxy material that seemed very slippery.
The material turned out to be an inert fluorocarbon — Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE — that had superior nonstick properties. Starting aroundDuPont began using another laboratory-formed chemical known as Perfluorooctanoic PFOA acid, or C8 so called because it contains eight carbon moleculesto smooth out the lumpiness of freshly manufactured Teflon.
The white, powdery compound, often said to look like Tide laundry detergent, would ultimately be used in hundreds of products including fast food wrappers, waterproof clothing, electrical cables, and pizza boxes.
DuPont used to purchase C8 from another chemical company called 3M untilwhen the company phased it out.
The trouble was that the compound — which has since been linked to a variety of health risks including cancer, liver disease, developmental problems, and thyroid disease — escapes into the air easily.
Due to its ubiquitous use, the chemical can now be found in trace amounts in the bloodstream of more than 98 percent of Americans, and even in umbilical cord blood and breast milk, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The chemical is expected to stay in the environment for thousands of years. Concerns about the hazards posed by Teflon and C8 began to garner public attention only about 15 years ago.
ByDuPont had dispersed almost 2. Now, information emerging from millions of pages of internal company reports reveals that several DuPont scientists and senior staff members had for many years either known, or at least suspected, that C8 was harmful. Yet DuPont continued to use the chemical, putting its own workers, local residents, and the American public at risk.
The company funds its own safety-testing laboratory — the Haskell Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology — in part to screen workers for signs of illnesses that might be tied to DuPont products.
Incompany lab tests linked C8 exposure to enlarged livers in rats and rabbits. DuPont scientists then conducted tests on humans, asking a group of volunteers to smoke cigarettes laced with C8. The stakes were high: The Washington Works plant where Teflon is manufactured was one of the biggest employers in the region. The plant currently employs more than 2, people — 3, if you include sub-contractors — in a sparsely populated Appalachian community alongside the Ohio River separating West Virginia from Ohio.

He said his firm will work with DuPont to finalize the settlement and get plaintiffs paid as quickly as possible. Vigneron had alleged PFOA exposure caused his kidney cancer. That same jury did not award any punitive damages. Bartlett and Freeman were two of the six so-called bellwether cases. After the five years of splitting the settlement's cost expires, Chemours' indemnification obligations under the separation agreement "will continue unchanged" and DuPont will have no commitment to fund PFOA costs, according to a DuPont statement.
When Chemours was spun out of DuPont, the companies agreed that DuPont must first pay any damages, but can pursue indemnification from Chemours. However, the settlement may prevent the two companies from clashing in court.
Chemours agreed that, upon the settlement becoming effective, it will not contest its liability to DuPont for PFOA costs as long as those expenses are generally applicable to the indemnification provisions. Those costs could include punitive damages, fines, penalties or attorneys' fees.
However, Chemours will retain defenses to whether any individual PFOA claim is within the scope of the indemnification. Chemours' stock jumped nearly 15 percent at the close of trading on Monday, reflecting investors' support for the settlement agreement. DuPont's stock also increased, although not as dramatically. Arnold said investors are reacting positively to the settlement because it resolves a lot of concerns Wall Street had about DuPont and Chemours.
It is relatively small and it removes all of the risk associated with the uncertainty surrounding these cases. The 3, lawsuits were filed by plaintiffs who opted out of the settlement in a separate class action.
